How To Update Your WP7 Samsung Focus With The NoDo Update On AT&T

Check out this article and comment here for WP7 update Help and Tips

Since this is the first update out for our beautiful WP7 devices it is nice to have a little bit of insight to what you are getting into.  It is certainly not a hard process but it is a bit more time consuming than you would think and slightly misleading at times.  When you are done you will be copy and pasting on your Windows Phone 7 device like a pro.  You will need your WP7 device, a micro USB cable, and a computer with an internet connection and Zune.

Updating Your WP7 Device With NoDo On AT&T

  1. Plug your Samsung Focus into an open USB port on your computer
  2. You might be prompted to update your Zune software, and if so the accept the update. (this should only take a couple of minutes or less)
  3. Next, you should get a Zune window telling you there is an update for you WP7 device. Click "update". This will update your WP7 device to build 7004 and will happen very quickly. (My first reaction was that the NoDo update was unbelievably fast but this was just the first update)
  4. Then, as soon as it was done you should be prompted again to update, if not then unplug the device and plug it back in.
  5. Select "update". This update will bring your device to build 7008 and will take about 20 minutes so be patient.
  6. When that one does finish you should unplug your phone and afterwards your phone should tell you you have update available so plug your WP7 device back in.
  7. Third time is a charm! On the third update prompt for your Windows Phone 7 device you are going to be getting the NoDo build 7390 and it will take about 26 minutes.

Some things you will see along the way

In the image above you will see what your phone will look like while your NoDo update is taking place.

Final Notes On NoDo WP7 Update Process

So far I am loving the NoDo update on my Samsung Focus. The process was longer than expected and like I said earlier a bit deceiving. After you think you have the 7390 build you only have the 7004 or the 7008. Considering this is the first update for our Windows Phones I think that the rest will be much smoother. NoDo did seem to bring the performance boost that it promised and of course the beloved copy and paste.

Having same problems, phone does not update when plugged into computer. Have tried for months. Zune will not load, goes on forever, and get a message that it will corrupt computer. The one time it did load (after multiple attempts, still no update. Very frustrating.

@Scott Plugging into the computer is a much safer and more reliable way to update a device. This has also always been the standard way of doing it. Not to mention with data plan restrictions updates could be costly over your data plan. Wired connections are in nature more reliable than wireless and a botched update could brick a phone.

I installed the software and Zune does not recognize my phone is connected... what give?

  • Charlene Posted October 30th, 2011

all of this is succesful, but the update is taking waaaaay longer than 20 minutes, and im only on the second try.

  • Randall B Posted October 24th, 2011

For ANYONE using a Windows Phone 7, you MUST have Microsoft Zune, you cannot sync, update, add, or remove files from your phone WITHOUT MICROSOFT ZUNE SOFTWARE. It's free, and has some cool features, so get it!

  • Brad Billman Posted October 14th, 2011

Just install Zune. For any device that gets updates as large a phone there needs to be software to install it. And for WP7 Zune is that software. Just like iPhone uses iTunes aside from the fact that you can't even use an iPhone without iTunes until ios5.

I am having the same problem as Tyler, I can't figure out how to get my computer to recognize my phone wen I plug it in.

i have 7720 on my samsung focus but still cant use my ringtones is there another update

  • Aaron H. Posted August 25th, 2011

Tyler, you will need to download the Zune software on to your computer first. You can download it at www.zune.net . After you install the zune software, plug your phone into your computer, start the zune software and you should be able to update your phone from there. Hope this helps.

  • Carrie Hunt Posted August 24th, 2011

You need the zune software like the post says you need to update the phone. Here is a website to get it http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/apps/zune-software.aspx your phone will not do anything without this.

  • Leah Posted August 16th, 2011

@Tyler- my phone is doing the same thing i have the samsung focus and i jsut got it a week ago. after i charged my phone i woke up to see i had an update availible. i pluged it into my computer like it said and what do you know! nothing.... it just charged my phone. if anyone can help us i would appreciate it.. :/ its starting to make me miss my android... :(

  • Scott Posted August 13th, 2011

Same problem for me. The doggone thing charges, that's it. And no matter what anyone says, an internet capable phone being forced to connect to a computer to download updates in the first place is a STUPID design.

  • Emily Posted July 26th, 2011

You need to download Zune on your computer. www.zune.net

  • Tyler Posted July 22nd, 2011

I've had this phone about 2 weeks and it says there is an update available but when I plug it in to my computer it doesnt do anything except charge. I bought it brand new. I dont understand how to get the download to start. There are no prompts that pop up either.
